Medicaid expansion would bring billions of our federal tax dollars home to generate $11 in economic activity for every $1 of state investment and nearly 30,000 new jobs. This infusion of capital would allow for investment in 21st-century rural hospitals and clinics, keep more doctors working in small towns, and provide more community mental health and substance use services for our workers.

VETERANS

The best way you can support our work to expand Medicaid is by signing this letter to Governor Ivey and the Alabama Legislature. If you're a veteran and share our goal to expand access to health care in Alabama, please complete this form to sign on.

More than 5,000 veterans and 7,000 of their family members are trapped in the coverage gap. It’s a common misconception that people who serve in the U.S. military automatically receive lifetime eligibility for health coverage and other benefits. In reality, veterans' health benefits depend on their length of service, military classification, type of discharge and other factors.

LAW ENFORCEMENT

The Cover Alabama Coalition is seeking support for Medicaid expansion from current and retired law enforcement officers in Alabama.

Law enforcement officers see firsthand the impact of unaddressed substance use disorders and behavioral health challenges in Alabama’s criminal justice system. Without insurance, most cannot afford the treatments that lead to recovery. By expanding Medicaid, Alabama would have more resources to finance programs that will help reduce the extent to which individuals with mental illness end up in the emergency room or incarcerated.

Medical Professionals

More than 300 Alabama medical professionals released a joint letter calling on Gov. Kay Ivey to expand Medicaid coverage immediately for adults with low incomes. The letter – signed by doctors, nurses, psychologists, dentists, and other medical professionals – urges Ivey to “put Alabamians first and expand Medicaid coverage … during the greatest public health crisis in more than a century.”

FAITH LEADERs

Nearly 300 Alabama faith leaders released a joint letter encouraging Gov. Kay Ivey to expand Medicaid coverage for adults with low incomes. The letter – signed by 278 pastors, rabbis and other faith leaders – asks for support for Alabama’s most vulnerable communities and acknowledges the limitations of charity alone.
