Alabamians Need Affordable Health Care!

The health care affordability crisis has hit home. Hundreds of thousands of Alabamians are now facing a breaking point.

Since 2021, Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (ePTCs) kept monthly premiums affordable for nearly 500,000 Alabamians. Because of these credits, families didn’t have to choose between going to the doctor and paying rent.

That changed on December 31, 2025. Congress allowed these life-saving subsidies to expire, triggering an immediate and devastating spike in costs for Alabama families.

🛑 The Impact: Real Stories, Real Losses

We’ve heard many heartbreaking stories of Alabamians whose health insurance costs soared to amounts they simply cannot afford. The recent drop in enrollment proves that people are being forced to make agonizing decisions about their health and their finances.

The Numbers So Far:

  • 22,000 Uninsured: Approximately 22,000 Alabamians have already lost their coverage entirely since the January enrollment deadline.

  • Premium Hikes: For those still enrolled, average premiums have nearly doubled, leaving working families to scramble for funds.

  • The "Junk Plan" Trap: With open enrollment closed, many Alabamians may have been forced into lower-tier plans with higher deductibles and fewer benefits.

The Long-term Risk: These "lower-value" plans leave families one diagnosis away from financial ruin. This shift will flood our healthcare system with medical debt and uncompensated care, threatening the survival of our local hospitals.

💡 This Harm is Entirely Preventable

The current crisis in Alabama wasn't inevitable. It was a policy choice. We are fighting for two clear solutions:

  1. At the Federal Level: Congress must do what’s right and reinstate the Enhanced Premium Tax Credits to stop these price increases immediately.

  2. At the State Level: Alabama lawmakers must close the health coverage gap to ensure every Alabamian can afford the medical care they need to survive and thrive.

How to take action

  1. Sign the petition to members of Alabama’s congressional delegation to demand they extend enhanced premium tax credits.

  2. If you’re a small business owner/employee or self-employed, sign this letter to our congressional delegation.
